VOLUNTEER FAQ's
Here is a list of the common questions we get asked, and some of the key information you'll need if you are considering volunteering with us. If you have questions that aren't covered here, please get in touch.
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER WITH UBUNTU AFRICA?
We welcome passionate individuals aged 18 and over who are eager to contribute meaningfully and respect local culture. Prior experience is not required—just an open heart and a willingness to learn. Your unique experiences and qualifications can open opportunities for different roles or tasks within the school, and we encourage volunteers to bring any skills or talents they may have. For safeguarding reasons, all volunteers must complete a full disclosure and background check before participating.
HOW DO I APPLY TO VOLUNTEER?
You can start your journey by filling out our short volunteer application form. Once we receive your application, a team member will be in touch to arrange a call and provide the next steps.
IS THERE A MINIMUM STAY OR COMMITMENT?
We recommend a minimum stay of two weeks to ensure both the volunteer and the community benefit from the experience. However, longer stays are encouraged and offer deeper engagement.
WHAT DOES THE VOLUNTEER FEE COVER?
All volunteers are required to raise a mandatory volunteer fee. This covers airport pickup, daily transport to and from the school with a trusted local driver, lunch at the school during volunteer hours, and accommodation in a local Airbnb with all home comforts—providing you a safe, relaxing place to unwind in the evenings.
After these essentials are covered, 100% of the remaining fee goes directly to the school, supporting daily meals, school materials, local staff wages, and essential operational costs. Volunteers are also encouraged to do additional fundraising or bring physical donations to further support the project.
WHAT KIND OF WORK WILL I BE DOING?
Volunteers contribute to a variety of tasks that support both the school and the wider community. These may include:
- Picking vegetables in the school’s community garden
- Supporting kitchen staff with meal prep and food service
- Helping serve breakfast and lunch
- Assisting in sourcing materials for vital school or community projects
- Classroom support such as marking or one-on-one reading
- Helping with playtime and outdoor activities to build relationships with the children
While roles vary depending on your skills and the school’s current needs, every task contributes to the larger mission. Many volunteers return year after year, forming lasting bonds with the school and community.
WHAT DOES THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
Volunteers work Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm alongside our dedicated team. Evenings are yours to relax, reflect, and enjoy your local surroundings.
On weekends, you’re free to explore! We can help arrange safaris, Nairobi city tours, cultural experiences, or excursions to Kenya’s beautiful coast—so you get to truly discover Kenya beyond Ngando.
WHAT CAN I DO ON WEEKENDS WHILE VOLUNTEERING?
Weekends are the perfect opportunity to explore Kenya beyond the classroom. We work with our trusted partners at Athari Africa Tours, who not only offer incredible experiences but also donate 10% of your safari fee directly back into local projects—so your adventure gives back. Some popular weekend activities include:
- Safari trips to stunning national parks with Athari Africa Tours
- City tours of Nairobi to discover its vibrant culture and history
- Feeding giraffes at the famous Giraffe Centre
- Visiting David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage during public nursery feeding times
- Exploring the Nairobi National Park Safari Walk, home to rescued animals who can’t return to the wild
- Dining at Nairobi Street Kitchen, a lively food truck warehouse showcasing local and international cuisine
We’re happy to help organise your weekend adventures so you can truly experience all that Kenya has to offer - ethically and enjoyably.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO VOLUNTEER REMOTELY?
Currently, our focus is on in-person volunteering to build genuine relationships and provide hands-on support, which we believe has the greatest impact. However, if you’re unable to travel, you can still support Ubuntu Africa by fundraising, hosting events, or raising awareness from home.
HOW DOES MY VOLUNTEERING MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Your time, skills, and support directly enhance the education, health, and wellbeing of children and families in Ngando, contributing to long-term sustainable change. Beyond your time on the ground, sharing your experience and fundraising helps us reach new supporters and amplify the impact of our work globally.
DOES UBUNTU AFRICA AVOID VOLUNTOURISM?
Yes. We are deeply committed to ethical, sustainable, and community-led development.
All our school staff are employed from within Ngando, and volunteers support - not replace - local jobs. Our projects are designed in partnership with the community, and every volunteer placement is built around real needs, not photo ops.
WHERE WILL I STAY DURING MY VOLUNTEERING?
You’ll stay in safe, comfortable local Airbnb accommodation with all home comforts, allowing you to immerse yourself in the culture during the day while enjoying a restful, secure environment in the evening.
CAN I TAKE PHOTOS DURING MY VOLUNTEER WORK?
Yes, photography is welcome, but it must be done with respect and sensitivity. Most children will happily ask for photos, and with their consent, we encourage volunteers to capture moments that create lasting memories and raise awareness.
However, photography should never take priority over your responsibilities. Volunteers should not photograph people in the street or film slum conditions without informed consent. All images should reflect the dignity and humanity of the community we serve.
CAN I VOLUNTEER AGAIN?
Absolutely - and most of our volunteers do! Many return year after year and become part of our Ubuntu family. Each visit deepens the connection and impact. We’d love to welcome you back.
WHAT HEALTH & SAFETY MEASURES ARE IN PLACE?
We prioritise your safety with secure accommodation, reliable local transport, and a team on hand to assist in case of emergencies. We also advise vaccinations and health precautions before travel.
DO I NEED VACCINATIONS, HEALTH CHECKS OR INSURANCE?
We recommend checking with your healthcare provider for travel vaccinations and health advice specific to Kenya before volunteering.
We also highly recommend you take out travel insurance appropriate for the volunteering and any tourism you'll be doing.
IS AIRPORT PICKUP PROVIDED?
Yes, your volunteer fee includes airport pickup and drop-off by a trusted local driver.
HOW WILL I GET TO THE SCHOOL?
Daily transport to and from the school is provided by a local driver, included in your volunteer fee.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
We’ll provide a packing list with essentials, including appropriate clothing for school and community work, sun protection, insect repellent, and personal items.
DO I NEED A VISA TO VOLUNTEER WITH UBUNTU AFRICA?
Yes, most visitors to Kenya will require a visa. It is each volunteer’s responsibility to check the specific visa requirements for their country of origin. We recommend applying for a Kenyan tourist eVisa through the official government website well in advance of your trip. Our team is happy to guide you through the process and answer any questions along the way.
