Whitney recently spoke to the New York middle school that she attended, Rippowam Cisqua School. Laura Feidelson, a student at Rippowam, was inspired by the presentation to write about Whitney and Ubuntu Africa in her applications for high school. Her beautiful and inspiring essay can be found here.

U.S. 10th grader Jaclyn Clark chose Ubuntu Africa as the focus of a recent Social Studies project. The project required Ms. Clark and her group to choose a specific global cause and relevant organization, and to then teach younger children about the chosen issue. Ms. Clark and her group used material from UBA to teach children ages 9-12 in her neighborhood about life and challenges young people face in South Africa. The group further supported UBA by raising over $2500!

Shane Handler, who just graduated from high school in New York this past May, had the opportunity to travel with his family to South Africa last year. While in Cape Town, the family spent time with the kids at the center. The experience so affected Shane that when he returned to his high school, he immediately began sharing information about Ubuntu Africa with his peers at the Harvey School. He invited Whitney to come speak at the school, he organized a fundraiser which raised over $2000 for UBA, and has other initiatives underway, such as dances, bake sales, and merchandise sales. Shane wrote about Whitney and Ubuntu Africa in his college application essays. An excerpt is below:
“I’ve learned so much throughout this experience, not only about life, but also about the power and potential each of us has to do something meaningful to make the world a better place. I used to watch the news or read the newspaper and feel depressed because many of the stores were so overwhelming and awful that it seemed they were hopeless causes. But now I know that one individual can accomplish anything they want if they are inwardly motivated. We cannot rely on others or our government to make things better; we each individually and as a community have to take responsibility for making the world a better place.”
